Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world

The province of Tierra del Fuego in the extreme south of Argentina, is known as “the end of the world. Its capital is Ushuaia, the southernmost city on the planet. Dreamlike landscapes and multiple proposals, the city is visited by thousands of tourists throughout the year.

Ushuaia is located on Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego on the Beagle Channel, at 55 º south latitude and 68 º west of Greenwich. Its name comes from the Yamana language means “bay overlooking the West”. The department has an area of 9390 km ² and has a deepwater port, this being the closest to Antarctica. Surrounded by the Martial Mountains and Olivia, the Andes, Ushuaia was founded on 12 October 1884. The climate is cold, tundra, with an average annual temperature of 5.7 º.

Spring and summer are the ideal seasons to visit Ushuaia and its environs. At this time of year, from September to March, you can enjoy many options for trekking and hiking, bird watching, horseback riding and mountain bike rides.

The Tierra del Fuego National Park, located seven miles west of Ushuaia, have an area of recreational development in the Bay Lapataia. There are several attractive pathways (Bahía Ensenada, Cañadón del Toro, the waterfall of the Rio Pipo, Roca Lake, Laguna Negra) and sport fishing can be done.

In Staten Island, where the lighthouse immortalized by Jules Verne, settled a prison by 1896. Given the inclement weather, had to be transferred to Ushuaia six years later. The “Tren del Fin del Mundo” is a replica of the railway using prisoners to supply fuel to the people. Visitors can recreate the same journey made then.

Another walk miss is the Martial Glacier, where practiced skiing and other snow sports. Using the chairlift as a means of elevation, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city.

Among the sea excursions, you can sail through the Beagle Channel, visit Bird Island, Isla de los Lobos and Faro Les Eclaireurs, reaching the Estancia Harberton (which can also be reached by land). Harberton was the first stay in the province, founded in the nineteenth century by the Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges.
