Xalapa, a Mexican city with great historical heritage

Located on the hill Macuiltepetl and foothills of the Cofre de Perote, between the Sierra Madre Oriental and the coastal plain of Gulf of Mexico is the city of Xalapa, Veracruz state capital. It is known as the “Flower City” due to the huge number of exotic plants and flowers to be found there. All around there are several rivers Sedeño, Carneros, the Laguna del Castillo and streams like Chiltoyac and Las Animas. Once inside the city limits are located the sources of the Tecajete and Xallitic. It is characterized by steep streets and cobbled alleys. As for the climate, the influx of northerly winds will produce large drops in temperature with occasional frosts in winter.
Xalapa is a place that attracts tourism for its architecture, its historical heritage and scenery. Since 1886, the year it was founded the first Normal School of Mexico, is referred to as the “Athens of Veracruz”. Since that time were established training centers and high level today, Xalapa is the headquarters of the University of Veracruz, the chief of state.

There are two important museums, the Museum of Anthropology and Interactivo de Xalapa (MIX) and several parks that are a visual spectacle. These include Park Benito Juárez, the Miguel Hidalgo (known as “The Cress”), the Ecological Macuiltépec, the Botanical Francisco Javier Clavijero and different ecological reserves.

Because of the importance of the historical, cultural and artistic heritage of the city, on 19 December 1990, Xalapa was declared by the Federal Government as a zone of historical and artistic monuments.

Among the places that tourists can not fail to know, besides the Government Palace, the Municipal Palace and Museum The Lencero, is the Metropolitan Cathedral, where you can see the image of the Lady of the Immaculate Conception, patroness of Xalapa religious . Its construction is very old and its facade still retains details of its original Gothic style. Started to build in 1741 in wood, but recently collapsed and was built in 1773 as the building is known today. Inside the church, Cathedral consecrated in 1864, a museum dedicated to the Bishop Rafael Guizar y Valencia, who was beatified in the year 1995 by Pope John Paul II.
