East of Santa Marta – via Riohacha, department of Magdalena – between the Sierra Nevada and the Caribbean Sea, lies the Tayrona National Park, a nature reserve where there is an incredible variety of dry and wet tropical forests, coral reefs and seagrass beds. There also home to over 100 species of mammals among which highlights the ocelot and the deer and birds as rare as the condor, the eagle lone eagle and white.

Created in 1969, the Park, one of the most visited places in Colombia, not only is nature in its purest form: there are also lots of history. For indigenous culture Tayrona, Pueblito or Chairama was the largest population in the region. Today, a stone path leads visitors to the area which brings a series of terraces, houses and internal trails. It is a sacred place for the indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Tayrona National Park is an ideal place for those seeking exotic destinations and want to have contact with native half. The accommodation is very natural: you can enjoy traditional camping hammocks between palm trees and overlooking the majestic mountain. For convenience, in the area there are 14 ecohabs Canaveral (cottages that retain characteristics of the architecture tayrona), in addition to traditional cottages.

Neguanje Cave, The Needle and Concha Bay Island are the perfect setting for diving because of its cold waters full of marine life. In Reef, located 30 minutes walk from the main entrance of the park, bathers can enjoy beautiful beaches with calm water. Instead, Canaveral is full of strong currents, but here also allows you to enjoy nature without fear of the ferocity of the sea in a special place called “the plunge pool.

A 90 minute walk from the main entrance lies the Cabo de San Juan de Guia, the maximum experience tayrona where you can see the contrast of the strength of the sea with the layout of the monoliths and exciting rainforest. Then a pre-Columbian stone path joins the Cape with Chairama (or Pueblito) through a steep hike in the midst of large vegetation, howler monkeys and hundred-foot trees that cover the entire landscape.

West of the Tayrona, at Km 56 route to Riohacha Quebrada Valencia is a small river that runs down to meet the sea. Since the area around the river mouth Palomino (Km 48 route to Riohacha) can spot the peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

You must present valid ID card to enter the protected area. The Colombian Red Cross and the Health Department Port of El Dorado Airport – International Pier in Bogota, are among the institutions that provide this service.

To conserve the ecosystems is forbidden to collect shells, corals, rocks, animal or plant material of the Park. We do not allow entry of aerosols or any other information deemed contaminant.
